Augmented Reality

The definition given in wikipedia.com for Augmented Reality (AR) is, “Augmented reality (AR) is an interactive experience of a real world environment where the objects that reside in the real world are enhanced by computer-generated perceptual information, sometimes across multiple sensory modalities, including visual, auditory, haptic, somatosensory and olfactory.”. AR is a system that combines the real world and the virtual worlds with real-time interaction and with accurate 3D registration of virtual and real objects. This technology helps people in daily activities and make it entertaining at the same time.
Global Market
The AR technology has implemented in many industries like, cosmetic industry, gaming industry, military and in E-commerce etc. Some of the examples are L’Oréal Paris Makeup Genius app, Disney Coloring Book, Google Pixel’s Star Wars Stickers, Bitmoji in Snapchat, Pokémon Go, IKEA Place App.
Disney Coloring Book
This Disney Coloring Book is made by Ever-Inventive Disney research team. This app is called color and play. When the drawing is colored, the character comes to life. It uses the colors and patterns applied by the child on the drawing to the 3D character displayed by the app in real-time. This intelligently uses the colors to the back of the 3D image as those colors cannot be represented in a 2D image. This app uses a process for real-time texturing an AR character from a drawing, deformable surface tracking on tablets and evaluation of the resulting coloring book app. https://youtu.be/SWzurBQ81CM

Weather channel studio effects
This is one of the best use of AR technology in the present. The traditional weather channels use a green screen behind and the map and the weather report is displayed in the back of the presenter. But using the AR technology they have created a virtual environment around the broadcaster with the environment with the actual weather. This was first broadcasted by NewcastStudio by the broadcaster Erika Navarro in September to show the danger of the Hurricane Florence bore down on North Carolina. This is a very useful implementation of AR technology. https://youtu.be/K75YFndkAZY
