Ikigai is a Japanese concept that you can be used to find your purpose of life. Every person’s thought and their wants are different. Whether you and your colleagues are studying in the same class, same subjects, your goals are not the same. And it is not that easy as we think to find something we love to do as a profession. But here is a great solution, Ikigai.

I currently study as a third-year undergraduate in Software Engineering at University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka. Software Engineering degree makes you qualified for various professions like Business Analysts, Game developers, Software Architects and many more, not just software engineer. So how can I drive myself forward in this degree program? Which path should I choose? Those were my questions. And this is how the concept of Ikigai helped me in finding my life’s purpose.

What do I love to do?

I love to design interfaces for apps, websites, design paper houses and graphics. And I also love making things comfortable and easier for me. For example, I love designing a folder structure to find my documents without wasting time.

What I am good at?

I found myself good at designing and drawing. If you are unsure about this, ask your friends and family. They will probably start with what you are bad at, but they will give you honest answers. Sometimes it is hard to figure out what you are good at as “good” is something relative. So, it is better if you can ask for help.

What does the world need?

The world needs new. It needs new innovations that need to make people’s lives easier. During the last year, we saw the necessity of software solutions to solve different problems. That is something what the world needs now.

What can I get paid for?

According to the things I am good at, can get paid for designing graphics and UIs. If you look carefully, everything you are good at can be turned in to a source of income.
